Experience the Sea in Premantura.

A Hidden Treasure in the Heart of Istria.

If there’s one place in Istria where nature reveals itself in its purest form, it’s Premantura. Located at the southernmost tip of the Istrian peninsula, it’s famous for the stunning Kamenjak Nature Park, but what many people don’t realize is that the real show begins underwater

During my trip to this region, I discovered a whole new side of Istria: breathtaking sea caves, historic shipwrecks, rock walls swarming with colorful fish, and seabeds straight out of a nature documentary.

In this post, I’ll take you on a journey through some of the most beautiful dive spots in Premantura and the surrounding area. Whether you’re a certified diver, snorkeling enthusiast, or just curious — get ready to be amazed.

Dive Into the Blue: Caves, Walls & Marine Life.

Premantura is a top destination for diving lovers. The waters are clear, rich in marine life, and offer excellent visibility to enjoy every underwater detail. Here are a few of my favorite dive sites:

Zelena Lanterna.

A gentle dive down to 27 meters with sandy seabeds, scattered amphora shards, and lots of small fish like damselfish and sea bream.

Red Rocks.

A sloping rock wall leading into sand. Depending on the season, you might spot dentex, seabass, or even pompano.

Uvala Polje – Zid.

Perfect for beginners, with a wall at the end of the bay that goes down to 28 meters. Expect to see mullets, groupers, gobies, conger eels, and lobsters.

Kolumbarice Caves (Cape Kamenjak).

One of the most magical experiences: these shallow caves are like something out of an adventure movie — light, rock, and water creating a surreal atmosphere.

Fraskeric Cave.

A series of tunnels and chambers to explore. Ideal for those looking for something a bit different, but still manageable.

Sunken Stories: Diving Among Adriatic Shipwrecks.

The waters off Istria are full of fascinating wrecks, many of them intact and open for exploration. Diving here is like swimming through a history book.

Baron Gautsch.

The “queen” of Istrian wrecks. This Austrian cruise ship sank in 1914 after hitting a mine. It’s protected by the Croatian Ministry of Culture and can only be visited with authorized dive centers. An unforgettable experience.

Rossarol.

An Italian destroyer that broke in two after hitting a mine in 1918. You can explore both sections — one even has visible artillery shells.

Luana, Josephina, Flamingo, Varese and Draga.

Each wreck has its own story: cargo ships, torpedo boats, fishing vessels, dredgers. Some are safe to enter, others are teeming with marine life and perfect for observation.

U-82.

A rare German WWII submarine. It’s partially preserved and easy to explore — great even for beginner divers.

My Advice.

If you’re planning a trip to Istria and want something more adventurous than crowded beaches, Premantura offers a truly authentic marine experience, filled with history, nature, and endless blue.

Whether you’re into technical dives or just want to snorkel along the coast, I guarantee the sea around Premantura will leave a lasting impression.
